SSG Perry “Smitty” Monroe Smith
SSG Perry “Smitty” Monroe Smith who died on January 17, 1971 while assigned to CCS. He was 24 years old, Special Forces qualified, had been in the Army for seven years and was on his second tour with MACV-SOG. He was fluent in the Vietnamese language. His casualty report shows that he took his own life.
 
He was awarded the Special Forces Tab, Combat Infantryman’s Badge (CIB), Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
 
Perry was born on July 2, 1946 in Guilford County, North Carolina. SSG Smith is on panel 05W, line 054 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. In addition to his parents, he was survived by his daughter, Kimberly M. Smith and two brothers. He was buried in Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington, NC.
